Two years ago MRP Steel invested in a Voortman V630M CNC beam drill line and VB1050 band saw, right now their investment pays dividends. About forty five minutes away from Ground Zero, MRP steel is fabricating a lot of the steel being used to rebuild the World Trade Center.
There is no sign of an economic slowdown at this busy mill, and MRP has gone on a hiring frenzy in the last year -- MRP’s President David Floyd says that they’ve increased their workforce by over sixty people and are now looking to hire another thirty. They hope to fill the empty spots by the end of December, and have received calls from interested workers as far away as Oklahoma.
The mill here is open seven days a week, and will fabricate 40 percent of the steel for the new 1,776-ft. tall World Trade Center tower one, formerly known as the “Freedom Tower.” They are also welding and fitting about half of the steel beams for WTC tower four, and 20 percent for the new transit hub at the site.
Steel is critical to recovery from the recession, according to Nancy Gravatt from the American Iron and Steel Institute, who says that for every one direct steel industry job, seven jobs are created in other sectors.
Here, the workers are not only grateful they are employed, but they are proud to be building the beams that will be the bones of what will be America’s tallest building.
