Like many other steel fabricators Fermeco strives for increased productivity and efficiency. In 2004 the company invested in a Voortman V613 drilling & sawing line to automate the facility. Recently Voortman installed a V250 plate punching & drilling system at Fermeco to automated the processing of plates.
With a yearly tonnage of about 3.500 tons of fabricated steel, Fermeco is a large steel fabricator based in Sweden. From the north of Sweden diverse projects throughout the country are fabricated at Fremeco. A number of recent projects include the Läkerol Arena and KA3, a furnace for iron ore at the LKAB iron ore mines in Kiruna.
Mr Öhlund: "We are installed the Voortman V613 four years ago. The machine is working perfectly and we are very pleased with Voortman. That is also the main reason why we again chose Voortman when upgrading of production equipment."
After the V250 plate punching & drilling system was purchased Fermeco immediately saw the benefit of increased output in the fittings area. Not only the production was increased but accuracy over the manual method was realized. Fermeco noted the programming and running the machine was also far easier and user friendly than they had envisaged. Mr. Öhlund said, "The Voortman systems really excel in user friendliness. Because of the visual interface the systems are very easy to work with."
The V250 purchased by Fermeco distinguishes itself by its versatility and capability. The punching machine has a punching capacity of 1.000 kN and triple tooling to avoid manual tool changing. To expand the machines capabilities Fermeco invested in a vertical drilling unit with automatic tool changer so that they are capable of producing plates up to 60mm in thickness. The basic drill head has the capability of drilling, tapping, countersinking and layout marking. Two of the greatest benefits of the Voortman V250 are the servo-controlled drilling head with constant torque so that carbide drills can be used and the repositioning system so that large plates can also be processed on the machine that exceed the standard table size.
