THE CHALLENGE
When Chris acquired Allwin Steel in 2021, the business had solid foundations but was facing significant equipment and service challenges. Much of the machinery hadn’t been properly maintained, causing unexpected breakdowns and costly downtime. “We were losing hundreds of thousands of dollars because of small failures,” Chris recalls. It was clear that to grow, they needed reliable systems and integrated technology.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Allwin Steel, part of the Steelworks Group in New Zealand, is a leading structural and commercial steel fabricator serving major builders and large projects nationwide. With around 100 employees, the company has the scale and expertise to handle complex projects while staying agile.

THE SOLUTION
The team decided to invest heavily in automation and advanced machinery. Having experience with Voortman equipment already, it was a natural decision to expand this relationship. “It was obvious we should go to Voortman. Everything talks to each other,” says Chris. A new drill-saw combo line and an updated coping machine were added and integrated with their detailing software, creating a fully streamlined process.

OUTCOMES WITHIN AN HOUR
The transition wasn’t without hurdles. The legacy machines required urgent servicing, and Allwin Steel worked closely with Voortman’s team to diagnose and resolve issues. Once a service agreement was in place and proper maintenance established, the machines became reliable workhorses. “Since then, we haven’t had a breakdown,” Chris says. He highlights Voortman’s quick, direct support: “I got outcomes within an hour of making calls to their team in Holland.”
Beyond the machines, Allwin Steel invested in a custom-built factory designed around efficient flow and minimal material handling. The new setup includes a blasting and painting line, allowing the company to deliver near-finished products and reduce project lead times by up to six weeks.
“I can honestly say hand on heart, we are probably putting out 99.99% accuracy on steel. We've had accolades from clients who say they've never seen steel go together so well.”

BETTER THAN TIMBER
The investments have paid off. Allwin Steel now boasts one of the most advanced steel fabrication setups in New Zealand. The company can maintain top-level accuracy, impressing clients with steel that “goes together better than timber.” Despite a challenging market, the team has stayed intact and is preparing to double the business in the next few years. “We can probably double our business again without adding many more people,” says Chris.
The key to success is a combination of great technology, reliable machinery, and keeping clients happy through consistent quality and service.
