SawingThe Voortman sawing systems are equipped with bi-alfa cobalt sawing blades. The bi-alfa cobalt sawing blades are equipped with HSS M42 cutting tips for abrasion resistance. M42 is high speed steel with a high content of cobalt. The hardness and hot hardness is superior (HRC up to 68) compared to more conventional high-speed steels but the costs and brittleness are less when compared to carbide tips. The sawing blade is equipped with a steel backing strip containing 4% chromium, which makes it perfect for high tension and blade-guide pressure. Two wheels on both sides of the blade tension the blade during cutting. A hydraulic tensioner ensures a constant tension on the sawing blade despite elongation during its lifetime. The blade is mist lubricated by a mixture of oil and air, which also reduces the need for cleaning of the blade. The speed of the sawing band is frequency modulated and when a new saw blade is installed, a special cycle can be selected which subjects the saw to a running-in procedure and temporary reduces the sawing speed. This procedure significantly extends the lifetime of the saw.

Voortman offers sawing blades with different teeth pitches and settings, fully depending on the line of work processed:

  • Pitch - 2/3 - Cross section solid material: 130 - 350 mm (5-1/8” - 13-3/4”)
    Processing mainly heavy beams.

  • Pitch - 3/4 - Cross section solid material: 80 - 180 mm (3-1/8” - 7”)
    Processing heavy and small beams.

  • Pitch - 4/6 - Cross section solid material: 50 - 120 mm (2”- 4-3/4”)
    Processing mainly small beams.

Beams which are not annealed deform during the sawing process because of unrelieved internal stresses. This deformation can jam the saw. To prevent the saw from jamming during cutting the sawing systems are equipped with a “steel pecking” cycle which moves the sawing blade up and down rapidly multiple times until it fully penetrates the material. It is also recommended to equip the saw with a wide setting saw blade for beams which most likely deform during sawing. While a normal saw blade creates a clearance of 0,7 mm (0.03”) on both sides of the blade a wide setting saw blade will create a clearance of 1,0 mm (0.04”). This will significantly reduce the risk of jamming.

All saw blades have teeth with a positive rake angle of 10 degrees. This tooth form is particularly well suited for the steel manufacturing industry where solid, thick-walled tubes and all higher-grade alloy material are processed.

The sawing blade is carried out under an angle of 3° (VB750) or 5° (VB1050 and VB1250) for optimal material removing and to enable higher sawing speeds.
